2009 Maipe Bonarda; Mendoza, Argentina

The 2009 Maipe Bonarda hails from 30 year old vines and it is a textbook expression of this grape variety.

This is a small production specialty of the winery and we were able to snag a small allocation of the 890 cases that came to the US market. This wine is a natural with rich pasta dishes, grilled sausages, and makes a perfect partner to a pizza. We loved the wild berry and violet aromas, as well as the fruit-filled medium-bodied palate with its round, velvety tannins and long finish.

The purple-colored 2009 Bonarda offers an enticing bouquet of smoke, mineral, and blueberry. Round and ripe on the palate, it has surprising depth and length for its humble price. Drink this succulent wine over the next three years.

Noted Italian winemaker Alberto Antonini acts as consultant for this estate in Mendoza, helping make velvety reds like this one.
