2012 Bodegas Coloma Evandria “Sinfonía de Tintos”; VDT de Extremadura, Spain

colomaGarnachaWeb began at the end of the 19th century when Don Francisco Coloma started making  home-made wines for the locals of his native town, Villanueva de los Infantes Valladolid, loacted in northern Spain. Years later, one of his sons, José Félix, seeking  a warmer climate, decided to continue the family wine making tradition in Extremadura, which is further south and adjacent to the Alentejo region of Portugal. For foodies, this is also the home of the dehesa, a beautiful harmonious ecosystem of holm oak and cork oak trees, grassland pastures, aromatic plants and acorns. It is also an especially important reserve for aromatic culinary plants such as thyme and rosemary as well as a wide variety of mushrooms. This exceptional habitat provides a natural and balanced diet for the Ibérico pig, and is key to achieving the sensory quality of Jamón Ibérico, one of the world’s most delicious cured hams.
It was in Alvarado, along the river-banks of Limonetes creek, a nearby tributary of the Guadiana river, where José Félix planted the first vines. Taking full advantage of this gentle climate, José Félix Coloma started growing traditional Spanish varieties such as: Garnacha, Graciano, Viura and Cayetana Blanca. Later on (1966) he introduced the French varietals Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, which have felt very much at home in their new surroundings.
This wine is a blend of 35% Garnacha, 35% Syrah, and 30% Cabernet grown on sparse and well-drained soils. The hand harvested grapes for this wine are sourced from two very stony vineyards, Viña Amelia and El Carrascal, and along with a very traditional fermentation and subsequent barrel ageing they have transformed themselves into a complex, fruit-filled red worthy of our “run don’t walk to buy this by the case” saying. The Sinfonía de Tintos is deeply colored and exhibits aromas of sweet herbs and spices, as well as a lush, full-bodied palate bursting with ripe raspberries, blackberries, and cherries. A great wine for cured meats, cheeses and stewed or roasted meats. Three varietals in perfect harmony – Sinfonía de Tintos!
