2012 Charles Baur Edelzwicker; Alsace, France

baurEdelzwicker12WebLocated in Eguisheim, in the heart of the Alsace wine region, the Baur family has been cultivating vines for several generations. The Domaine Charles Baur is composed of 16 hectares of vines located on the finest slopes of Eguisheim and its immediate vicinity and it is from these sites that this unique wine hails. Grapes: 50% Pinot Blanc, 40% Sylvaner, and 10% Gewurztraminer. Each grape variety is harvested individually in early or mid-October, fermented separately then blended and aged in tank before bottling. Baur’s Edelzwicker has an engaging, slightly exotic nose of melons, citrus, almonds and a floral top-note. The first sip shows its true character: fresh and lemony with balanced, complex fruit flavors. It is dry, round, and easy drinking, not overpowering and finishes cleanly. It is a good companion for food without ever dominating it. In general Edelzwicker pairs well with fresh salads, cold or warm starters, fowl, oysters, mussels and spicy seafood dishes as well as aromatic cheeses like Münster!
