Two new wines from "The Blue Zone" of Sardinia and two new vintages of some ongoing favorites from Chile are the headliners for this Saturday's tasting. Affordable, unique and offering great balance of fruit, these wines are ready to pair up with your next home menu. Join Chris Mentch at the tasting bar this Saturday for an extraordinary tasting.
2009 Santa Rita Sauvignon Blanc 120; Valle Central, Chile One of the best and most consistent value-priced brands to come out of South America, Santa Rita's 2009 Sauvignon Blanc is definitely on the mark again. Clean and refreshing, this wine is full of crisp, enticing fruit. Displaying notes of lemons, green apples, melons, and passion fruit, this finishes surprisingly long for a wine with such a lowly price. Great with spicy dishes, shellfish, salads and seafood.
AWM Regular Price: $7.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $7.19 per bottle or $6.39 by the case
2008 Sella & Mosca "La Cala" Vermentino di Sardegna; Sardinia, Italy This wine takes its name from a secluded cove on Sardinia's northwestern coastline, characterized by unusual purple rocks perpetually eroded by the sea. Vermentino is a native grape variety, one which thrives under the beneficial influence of Mistral winds blowing from the mainland. Delicious apple and pear flavors and a crisp finish are the hallmarks of this exceptionally versatile wine. Try this with olive and caper influenced dishes and you'll be in for a treat. Delicious with appetizers, shellfish and strongly flavored fish dishes, too.
AWM Regular Price: $14.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $13.49 per bottle or $11.99 by the case
2009 Montes Limited Selection Pinot Noir; Casablanca Valley, Chile The '09 Montes Pinot Noir opens with an intense and elegant nose, with notes of strawberry, red cherry, and raspberry, and hints of violets and smoke. The medium-bodied palate is well balanced, with pretty red fruits, soft tannins, and fresh acidity. The finish is elegant, long, and satisfying. Decanting is recommended to show the wine at its best. It was made with fruit from the Casablanca Valley, received minimal filtration, and was aged eight months in new and older French oak. This is an exceptional value in Pinot Noir!
AWM Regular Price: $15.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $14.39 per bottle or $12.79 by the case
2005 Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva; Sardinia, Italy The 2005 Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva is made in a medium-bodied style that emphasizes its ethereal, perfumed aromatics rather than an overt expression of fruit, as is often the case with other Cannonaus. This understated, elegant wine reveals a core of sweet, spicy cherries that blossoms as the wine opens in the glass. It remains a feminine wine of notable class, particularly at this level. Try this with lamb, pork, seasoned cheeses or rich pasta dishes.
AWM Regular Price: $15.99 per bottle
Special Tasting Price: $14.39 per bottle or $12.79 by the case
Special tasting prices: 10% off the bottle and 20% off by the case, mix or match unless already discounted via a special price or sale price.
