First created in 1872, Lillet is the best-selling French aperitif in the United States. These wines were created by two French brothers who blended white Bordeaux wine with a mixture of macerated fruits and a small amount of quinine. Today, ten different fruits - eight of which are a well kept secret - along with sweet and bitter orange peel and quinine are cold-macerated in French brandy for 4 to 6 months before they are mixed with Bordeaux wine and aged. The Lillet Blanc is made with Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Muscadelle grapes and the Lillet Rouge is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
