2006 Alberto Marsetti “Grumello” – Valtellina Superiore– Approachable, delicious Nebbiolo

Alberto Marsetti is afflicted by an uncommon passion and love for grape growing. Just like six generations of his predecessors, Alberto spends 365 days a year caring for and nurturing his vines in the climatically challenging mountainous Valtellina region in the extreme North of Lombardy. The vineyards are terraced, the hillsides are steep and the work is very labor intensive.  This, Italy’s most northern outpost for its most noble red grape variety – Nebbiolo, or Chiavenasco as it is known here, is a “mountain” wine in the true sense of the word. Alberto Marsetti produces a mere 25,000 bottles annually but his are some of the finest, most pure, fragrant and emotionally compelling wines to be found in this almost inaccessible viticultural outpost.

This is a top-quality 100% organically grown Nebbiolo wine from the most northerly part of Lombardy. A nose of bright red currants, raspberries, mountain flowers and herbs is followed by a palate of red berries and cherries with notes of cigar box and exotic spice. The finish is medium-length, wilh more spice and cherry flavors. This is a great accompaniment to lighter meat dishes, including pork and veal; stands up well to earthy, flavorful preparations. This is a fine candidate for additional short-term cellaring (2-3 years) or drink now for its delicious flavors.
