2009 Domaine de la Guilloterie “Affinité”; Saumur, France

Patrice and Philippe Duveau, now the sixth generation to own and run the Domaine de la Guilloterie, oversee vineyards spread over 50 hectares in Saint-Cyr en Bourg, to the south of the Loire river, along its confluent called le Thouet.

Its specific climatic conditions, the protection offered by the Loire and this tributary, as well as the terroir of limestone-clay soil and sub soils called “Tuffeau” make this area extremely propitious for the cultivation and maturation of Cabernet Franc. The wines produced around the renowned Saint-Cyr en Bourg village, and more precisely at Domaine de la Guilloterie, are superbly expressive and have a distinctive personality and sense of place. Patrice and Philippe Duveau preside over their beautiful property of “tuffeau” (limestone and clay soil) using sustainable agricultural practices and a generally non-interventionist philosophy.

Their methods have paid off, as demonstrated by this lovely, silky smooth 100% Cabernet Franc wine. The nose is very aromatically nuanced, with dark cherry, tobacco leaf, and raspberry notes, followed by a plush palate of suave, bright red cherry/cassis/currant accented fruit. Even the subtle tannins are cherry-pit flavored. This is a textbook example of Cabernet Franc from a vintage that blessed the red wines of the Loire valley.

Very food friendly – try it with beef or lamb stews, exciting with a grilled salmon and teriffic with mushroom or truffle dishes!
