2010 Château Grande Cassagne; Costières de Nimes, France

Château Grande Cassagne, owned and operated by Benoît and Laurent Dardé, is situated on the western edge of the Rhône Valley near the village of St. Gilles. Their vineyards are planted on an ancient riverbed covered with cailloux, or round weathered stones. The Dardé brothers, Laurent and Benoît, farm 80 acres of rocky bench-land 25 miles west of Avignon and are well known for their exemplary red wines of deep concentration. Serious leaf-pulling and crop-thinning is practiced each vintage by the Dardé brothers to ensure maximum ripeness and deep, saturated wines.

2010 was a superb vintage in the south of France and this Grenache/Syrah blend has to be one of the best red wine bargains in the marketplace. The Grenache (60 years old) is tank-fermented, with a small portion of the (40 year old) Syrah cask-aged. Rich in color, this wine exudes powerful red fruits and the spice character southern French wines are noted for. The wine is nicely textured with ripe tannins that hide behind the fruit to create a wonderfully juicy, round wine. Rich in aroma and flavor, this inexpensive red drinks well now and will age gracefully over the next 2-3 years. Perfect with grilled meats, or on a picnic with hard cheeses and a loaf of crusty bread.
