2011 Anton Bauer Grüner Veltliner “Gmörk”; Wagram, Austria

Anton Bauer continues to impress us with his production of the traditional white wines of Austria from the Wagram, a 40 km long and 30 m high ridge between the towns of Krems and Tulln consisting of ancient gravel sediments laid down by the Danube. The name Wagram goes back to the old word “Wogenrain” or “Wogenrand”, i.e. some sort of boundary or edge, which was formed by wave action of a primeval river or sea. During the storms of the ice age, loess (a wind-blown dust) was deposited on the southern slopes of the gravel formations, characterizing today’s landscape and contributing to its fertility. The Gmörk is a southern vineyard site at the foot of the Hengstberg hill which is situated between the cellar roads of Feuersbrunn and Fels. This deep loess soil provides one of the classic Feuersbrunn Grüner Veltliner sites with everything it needs to yield a lively, fruit-filled wine brimming with richness and finesse.

The 2011 Grüner Veltliner Gmörk is a classic example of this varietal. The nose is powerfully aromatic, with engaging notes of ripe citrus fruits and herbs. On the palate, the wine is kept very lively by a crisp acidity as well as pure apple/citrus flavors that keep you coming back for more. This wine is an ideal aperitif, but works well with fresh vegetables, fish dishes, and of course Wiener Schnitzel. The dry, full-flavored palate is very well-balanced and the subtle white pepper (classic Grüner Veltliner) notes on the finish just add to the fun!
