2011 Paul Direder Zweigelt; Wagram, Austria

Young wine-maker (24) Paul Direder likes nature: “Nature is life.  It is very interesting to me what grows within one year, bears fruit and dies away.”  As one of eight grandchildren of the Direder family in Kirchberg am Wagram(50 km west of Vienna) he inherited the passion for wine from his grandfather. Paul D. has grown into his responsibility as winemaker – while his grandfather Leopold Direder stands by his side with vineyard knowledge and competence. Anton Bauer, a long-time friend and now mentor, provides valuable expertise to his young protege, who has vaulted onto the Austrian wine scene as a young vintner to watch.

This is a pure, ripe,  cherry-filled, polished, sappy, and lip-smackingly juicy expression of Zweigelt that finishes with an interesting subtle fruit-pit bitterness. The medium-bodied, smooth and low tannin profile of this wine allows it to be a hit with spicy cuisine where a refreshing wine is needed, but one that also needs to be red. Perfect on a picnic, this is a crowd pleasing wine that defines pleasure, price worthiness, and quality.
