2011 Stellenzicht Chardonnay “Hill and Dale”; Stellenbosch, South Africa

Stellenbosch is considered one of South Africa’s most prestigious winemaking regions. Its Winelands are located between the False Bay coast to the south and Paarl to the north and the region enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and cold, wet winters. A rich diversity of soils and altitudes and cooling summer breezes from the ocean make it ideal for the cultivation of top quality wine grapes and the birthplace of many an award-winning wine.

The history of Stellenzicht dates to 1692, when it was part of a much bigger property granted to its first owner, Barendt Hendrikse, by Governor Simon van der Stel in an area that would later become known as the Stellenbosch district. He named the property Rustenburg although there was already a farm with the same name, but spelled Rustenberg. One can well imagine the confusion the similarity in the names created. According to local legend, two subsequent owners met one evening in a pub in Stellenbosch. When both were rather deep in their cups, they agreed to flip a coin to decide who would have the right to the name. The owner of Rustenberg (which still exists today) called it right and Rustenburg was renamed Stellenzicht (literally meaning “View of Stellen”(bosch).

The name, Hill&Dale, is a direct translation from the Afrikaans “Bergendal” which was a previous range of wines produced at Stellenzicht Vineyards in the 1990s. Due to the difficulties which some international markets had with the pronunciation of the “Bergendal” name, it was decided to change the name to Hill&Dale – which is very easily recognised and pronounced in most countries of the world. The name also points to the name of one of the properties, Hillandale, from where fruit is sourced for the making of these wines.

This lovely wine exhibits a bright golden color as well as a ripe, richly fruited nose highlighted by a kiss of oak. On the palate, plenty of spicy citrus and orchard fruit works its way straight to the finish. Shored up by subtle, oaky flavors, the vibrant fruit carries the day and  comes through loud and clear all the way through the lengthy finish. This wine truly shines and represents great value for Stellenbosch Chardonnay.
