2014 Bricco dei Tati Barbera Langhe, Piemonte, Italy

Unbeatable Barbera Deal

We've been on a roll lately with some terrific Italian reds that are amazing bargains considering the quality involved.  They're certainly a reminder that you don't have to spend a bundle in order to get a super tasty wine made by a quality-driven producer.

This lovely Barbera comes from a family dedicated to providing the world with superbly crafted wines at a fair price. Regular readers of the AWM Email newsletter and visitors to ours website know one of Larry's oft-repeated mantras -- find a great producer and drill down from their top selections to find the entry-level gems at bargain prices. Well, how about a producer that only makes great quality wines at reasonable prices -- let me introduce you to Bricca dei Tati.

The village of Treiso is nestled in the Lange, and home to Emanuele and Mary Beth Gaiarin, owners of Bricco dei Tati. Although the region is famous for more expensive wines such as Barbaresco, the Gaiarin family concentrates on producing superb quality yet affordable wines that can be enjoyed every day -- a great example of what I always refer to as a "Tuesday Night Wine."

So far, we have a terrific wine, at a great price, organically farmed and produced, from a family-owned and operated property, and located in one of the world's most prestigious wine regions. Hard to think it could get better -- well, it does.

More often than not, a great little wine like this will leave its home region as a bargain. however, it will arrive to the consumer at quite an inflated price.  Each part of the trip adds onto that final price -- the importer, transportation costs, distributor markup, brokers, warehouse fees, etc. Emanuele and Mary Beth found a great solution to avoid all of this -- they formed their own importing company here in the states!  This allows them to control the entire logistics chain from grape to your glass and the end result is tremendous savings.

Here is a note from the winery that sums it all up very nicely:

''Bricco dei Tati Estate Bricco Dei Tati is a small, family-owned wine estate in the heart of the Lange region of Piemonte, Italy. The estate covers just a little more than three acres on a hillside across the valley from the village of Barbaresco. The majority of the vines are now 80 years old. It’s a spectacular place, rich in beauty and tradition. The estate has been managed and cultivated fully organic and sustainable for the last fifty years. The Barbera grapes is a grape that makes one of the most compelling wines on the market today. The perfume makes this wine the best and easiest of all wines for food pairings. This wine has a persistent and attractive bouquet of black cherries and a bit of spice on the palate. It has few tannins which is typical of the Barbera varietal, and a medium finish. Delightfully approachable, it is great with medium to strong cheeses, barbecue and game. Also wonderful with pizza, pasta and sandwiches.'' - Bricco Dei Tati
