2015 Hyatt Cabernet Sauvignon Rattlesnake Hills AVA, Yakima Valley, Washington

Delicious Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon from the Hyatt Family

Wines from Washington state tend to take somewhat of a back seat in the West Coast world of wine — California gets the bulk of the love and accolades. All of that is beginning to change.

In the past, you may have enjoyed wines from the pioneers and trailblazers of the region such as Chateau Ste. Michelle, Barnard Griffin, Hogue Cellars, Woodward Canyon, L’Ecole N°41 and Leonetti Cellars. These producers certainly paved the way for a new generation of growers and winemakers putting Washington State second in overall wine production only to California!

Cabernet Sauvignon is king here along with Merlot and Petit Verdot, making this an especially interesting area for red Bordeaux lovers. The region features a recipe of climate and terroir that’s just right for these varietals. Washington’s northern latitude allows for extended hours of sunlight in the growing season. The cooler temperatures during harvest when compared to California, allow for longer ripening time on the vine — essential for a good balance of ripeness and acidity. The perfectly infertile blend of soil found here is ideal for viticulture. Loess, sand, pebble, and alluvial deposits over a basalt rock base provide both drainage and an inhospitable medium for phylloxera. The combination of dry climate and the abundance of available water supplies both help to produce richly flavored and nicely ripened fruit.

Rattlesnake Hills AVA

Rattlesnake Hills is the northern boundary of Yakima Valley, located north of the Sunnyside Canal and Interstate 82 and about 4 miles southeast of the city of Yakima. The 1807 acres of vineyards in the AVA are some of the highest in the state, ranging from 850-1600 feet. Vineyard soils here are typical of the region and are mostly silt and sandy loams — perfect for Cabernet Sauvignon.

The oldest vineyard in the AVA,  Morrison Vineyard, was planted in 1968 by Gail Puryear of  Bonair Winery and Vineyards, and continues to produce Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. In addition to Hyatt, well-known vineyards in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA include DuBrul, Elephant Mountain, Dineen, and Outlook. The principal city in the region, Zillah is home to the Hyatt family’s winery.

Hyatt Family Vineyards

Leland and Lynda Hyatt

Hyatt Vineyards is a family-owned enterprise created, owned and operated by Leland and Lynda Hyatt. Their winery site is located three miles north of Zillah and features vines that were planted in 1983. Over the years, their vineyard holdings have grown to three sites with a total of 120 acres under vine.

As they approach their fourth decade in the wine business, Leland and Lynda Hyatt, along with winemaker Marty Johnson, continue to produce value-oriented, quality-driven wines.

Estate Cabernet Sauvignon at a bargain price

Hyatt Vineyards in the Rattlesnake Hills Ava

Since we’re talking about a family-owned, estate bottled wine, we would usually be looking at a price tag starting at $20,  or more — not so here!  This is a lot of wine for such a modest price.

Most importantly, in the glass, you’ll find lovely aromas of toasty blueberry and blackberries. The palate is rich, generous and lifted, featuring notes of plum, blueberry,  mocha, dark chocolate, blueberry toast, and finishing with subtle notes of spice and vanilla.

This is a pretty versatile Cab.  You could enjoy this with a wide variety of grilled or seared meats, or just on its own. The tannins are present, yet they are ripe and pleasant so this is certainly a great Cab for the porch and patio.  If you’ve liked the Paris Valley Road Cab,  and are ready for a step up in quality without a step up in price… this one’s for you — superb Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon at an unbeatable price!
