2017 Le Mistral Joseph’s Blend Single Vineyard Selection Monterey County, California

One of the most famous "Rhone Ranger" blends!

Le Mistral, one of the most famous "Rhone Ranger" blends!

In the 1980s, Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Vineyard, Joseph Phelps of Joseph Phelps Winery, John MacCready of Sierra Vista Winery, Fred Cline of Cline Cellars Winery, Steve Edmunds of Edmunds St. John, and Bob Lindquist of Qupé Wine Cellars, along with many others became known as the original 'Rhône Rangers'. This group embarked on a mission to introduce and expand appreciation of California wines made with varietals from the Rhône Valley in France.  The success of Grenache and Syrah in California, in addition to other grapes indigenous to the Rhône stands as a testament to their success.

This week's special insider deal for Sale Week is a spectacular Rhône style blend originally belonging to the Joseph Phelps Vineyards.  Folktale Winery, the current property owner, is continuing the tradition and their 2017 release is a sure winner!  The blend features Grenache, Syrah and just a touch of Viognier aged in mostly neutral French oak. A small percentage spends time in new French barrels providing a nice balance of structure to the lush fruit.

In the glass, notes of brambly blueberry and blackberries jump out, along with hints of baking spice and savory herbs.  The lush and silky palate of dark berry and blueberry is wrapped with layers of herbal notes that finish on the smooth and lengthy palate. This rich and full-bodied red is the perfect pair for your winter grilling, seared chops, and all of the great braises and ragouts of the cooler weather.  It's a hedonistic red that's meant for enjoyment now, however, it will cellar nicely for the next few years.
