2018 Bouchié-Chatellier “Argile d Silex” Pouilly Fumé, Loire Valley, France

Sold Out -- Call to get on the re-order list

Stellar Pouilly Fumé - rarely available in the U.S. market

I’ve been anxiously waiting for this wine’s arrival all summer! When a broker buddy of mine from France set us up to taste this wine… I was in heaven!

Domaine Bouchié-Chatellier is widely regarded as the best producer in Pouilly Fumé. The majority of their wines are sold directly to the public at the Domaine, with only minuscule amounts released to select bottle shops and negocients in the U.K. and Europe. It’s exceedingly rare to find the “Argile d Silex” in the United States, so you can imagine my delight when I was presented the opportunity to purchase 10 cases.

Their property borders the estate of the late Didier Dagueneau and the Bouchié-Chatellier vineyards share precisely the same silex soil and perfect microclimate as the Dagueneau property. When Didier’s wines started to acquire a fervent cult following, the prices skyrocketed to levels way beyond the means of most wine lovers.

Here’s an opportunity to experience a Dagueneau level wine at a fraction of the price!

Just across the Loire river from Sancerre

Domaine Bouchié Chatellier "La Renardiere" Estate in the village of St Andelain

The eastern Loire River Valley is home to the world’s most famous and sought-after Sauvignon Blanc and the villages of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé are at the region’s epicenter. The appellation of Pouilly-Fumé sits on the opposite bank of the Loire River, just across from its somewhat more famous neighbor Sancerre. Wine production here dates back to Roman times, and in the middle ages, wines from the Loire were more highly prized than those from Bordeaux and Burgundy!

Compared to Sancerre, the soil in Pouilly-Fumé has a higher percentage of flint, storing the ground’s heat more efficiently — producing a rounder ripeness along with the signature flinty minerality.

Domaine Le Galantin and the Pascal family

Arnaud Bouchié is the 5th generation to make wine and work his family’s vineyards. Arnaud trained extensively in France after oenology school and returned to his home town to continue his family’s legacy. He is hyper- dedicated to producing wines that perfectly reflect the flinty clay soil of Pouilly-Fumé while preserving the freshness of the bright and lifted fruit.

This wine is truly a joy in the glass — it reminds me of just how special Sauvignon Blanc from Pouilly-Fumé can be when produced by a talented artisan focused on terroir. As the wine warms in your glass and as you swirl to release the aromatics, the wonderful purity of the fruit begins to emerge with notes of citrus, tropical fruits, and white flowers. On the palate the lush texture is the star — it’s a mouth-filling symphony of lemon, gooseberry, guava, wet stone and a subtle and welcome hint of orange oil and nectarine. At the end of the middle palate, the gorgeous, flinty minerality kicks in and continues to a super-lengthy finish along with the lush fruit.

If you’re a fan of fresh, clean Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire, this one’s for you. Sancerre fan? Do yourself a favor and try this stellar Pouilly-Fumé. Wanted to try one of Didier Dagueneau’s wines, but couldn’t cozy up to the price? This is the experience you’ve been looking for!
