2018 Rural Pinot Noir Eagle Peak AVA, Mendocino, California

Pinot Noir fan? Don't miss this one!

Ben and Jake Fetzer are the third-generation of California vintners to bear their family’s famous name. The Fetzer name is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable old-school names in the West Coast wine scene; however, you can throw out whatever you may have known about Fetzer wines in the past — brothers Ben and Jake are on a mission to make the perfect Pinot Noir.

Mendocino County

Ben and Jake’s grandfather Barney Fetzer came to Mendocino County in the late 1950s and established the family vineyards in 1968. After decades of work to make Fetzer a household name in the wine world, Barney sold the family winery in the early 1990s.

Ben and Jake are continuing the family legacy at Masút winery — a property their father Bobby Fetzer acquired in the mid-1990s. Over the last ten years, they have built Masút into a world-class winery, honing their focus particularly on Pinot Noir. Here is where the story of Rural Pinot Noir begins

3rd generation vintners

Rural Pinot Noir is a side project of the Fetzer brothers produced at their Masút winery in Mendocino. The initial project focuses on fruit sourced from the Eagle Peak appellation, and future releases of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon will also focus on the diversity of Mendocino’s sub-appellations

We fell in love with this tasty West Coast Pinot Noir at first sip. The medium garnet color leads to a palate brimming with juicy cherry, raspberry, and strawberry. Subtle hints of violet, tea, and forest floor let you know this is classic Pinot Noir! There’s a nice dollop of richness in the middle palate that balances the silky tannins, and an ample beam of freshness and acidity keeps the lengthy finish super-clean. If you’re a Burgundy fan, there’s a lot to like about this one. If you’re already a fan of West-Coast Pinot Noir, this one’s a no-brainer!

I first introduced this gem at last year’s Holiday Tasting, and we sold through our first 20 cases before I could even get it into the newsletter. Another 30 cases arrived in February and it’s going fast, so get some while we have it!
