Azienda Agricola Fontodi – Flaccianello Della Pieve

flaccianello04WebFontodi is located in the heart of Chianti Classico precisely in the valley which lies due south of the town of Panzano and is called the “Conca d’Oro” (the golden shell) because of its amphitheater shape. A genuine and characteristic “terroir”, famous for centuries for its tradition of quality wine cultivation, thanks to a unique combination of high altitude, calcaire clay-schist soil, lots of light, and a fantastic micro-climate – warm and dry with a marked difference in day and night-time temperatures.

Fontodi is also a certified organic estate which extends over 130 hectars of which about 70 are planted with vines. The type of agriculture practised is inspired by the principles of respect of nature and sustainability. Not only are no chemical products used but there is an effort to maximize the internal resources of the estate, thereby reducing the need for any external input. Respecting the environment means wines that are better, purer, and a truer expression of the grape and the territory.

Fontodi’s Flaccianello is simply one of Italy’s, and the world’s, greatest wines.  It has been for many, many years.  Their 100% Sangiovese “Flaccianello” is the ONLY wine from anywhere in the entire world to rank in the top 10 of Wine Spectator’s Top 100 Wines of the Year list three different times in the last decade; no Bordeaux or Burgundy or Brunello or Barolo or California Cabernet has accomplished this feat of quality and consistency and neither have Flaccianello’s “Super Tuscan” peers like Sassicaia, Ornellaia, or Solaia.  Any serious collector should have Flaccianello in their cellar and the 2004’s and 2006’s are stunning vintages for Flaccianello.  Our offering of large format bottles is truly stellar and a once-in-a lifetime opportunity for Italian collectors.

“The 2004 Flaccianello della Pieve is super elegant, polished and impeccably refined, just as it always has been. At the same time, it is one of the bigger 2004s from Tuscany readers will come across. Dark red berries, flowers, spices and menthol are layered into the finish. Today the aromatics aren’t fully developed, but that should not be an issue in another few years. There is plenty of underlying structure to support many years of fine drinking. The quality of the tannins is particularly fine, especially next to the other great Flaccianellos. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2029.”

“The 2006 Flaccianello della Pieve is monumental, as it has been since the very beginning. Smoke, black cherries, plums, incense, licorice and tar are some of the many notes that burst from the glass in this powerful wine. The 2006 has fruit and structure to burn. It is going to be an absolutely fabulous wine to follow over the coming years, but patience is key. A huge, explosive finish rounds things out in style. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2036.”
