AWM Exclusive Best Buy

La Encina Centenaria has returned!  This was one of the best finds from my trip to Spain earlier this year and I'm delighted to report that another 20 cases have just arrived. This is another exclusive AWM Hand-Picked Selection that comes directly to a North Carolina importer and distributor and then right to me. This cuts out all of the "middlemen" that inflate the price, allowing me to pass the savings on to you!

Bodega Vinessens

Bodega Vinessens is a small family-run winery established in 2007.  Although it's a young winery, their wines are made from superb old vines, some of which are over 100 years old. I just love the way the family expresses its grape growing and winemaking philosophy: "At Bodega Vinessens we are always in search of what we call ‘Vinos de Autor’ (Author Wines). Wines that reflect our personalities produced using almost entirely artisan techniques. We are a true reflection of what has become known as a ‘Garage winery’, a new style of winery with new exciting and cutting-edge interpretations of winemaking."

Perfect blend of old world and cutting edge

There's a great balance of old world tradition and modern methodology at work here.  A hand-picked harvest and very strict hand sorted selection marry nicely into the modern winemaking techniques, helping to create the deft balance between the more rustic old world style and the lush and smooth fruit of modern winemaking practices. The blend is mostly Monastrell (Mourvedre in France, and the 'M' in 'GSM' blends) with just a small addition of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah to add depth and richness. Aging in both French and American oak adds character without stepping on the pure and ripe fruit.

All in all, this is a wine that certainly drinks well above its price tag and will be delicious with steaks and chops from the grill.

Here's a great tasting note from the winemaker that sums it up very nicely:
"Deep cherry-red color with purple edges. Aromas of red and black berries and plums and hints of balsamic vinegar, plum, and herbs. In the taste, it is the rich fruit that really stands out, in perfect harmony with the slightly spicy notes. The structure is soft and silky and ripe tannins and a balanced acidity complete the experience. The big ripe fruit taste lingers long in the aftertaste."
