Château Cap Royal Bordeaux Supérieur Bordeaux, France

The 2015 Cap Royal is back one more time!

The 2015 Château Cap Royal has been one of our most popular Bordeaux selections. Over the last couple of years, we’ve sold hundreds of cases and it’s become the most requested property of all our Bordeaux selections.

Cap Royal takes its name from the Royal Cordouan Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse of Europe, located at the entrance of the Gironde River. This 14th century beacon once provided safe passage for the Bordeaux wine merchants returning home after sharing their great wine with the rest of the world.

Winemaker Jean René Matignon

Cap Royal benefits from the expertise of Jean René Matignon, winemaker of Château Pichon Baron, a Grand Cru Classé property in Pauillac. Jean René is know all throughout Bordeaux as a master in the art of blending and an expert in barrel aging.

The blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot comes from vineyard plots personally selected for quality and complexity by Jean René Matignon. Aging in oak barrels the traditional Bordeaux way allows for an immediately pleasurable wine with the unmistakable notes and nuance of the Médoc.

Here’s a short video where Jean René talks about the blending and aging of Cap Royal.

In the glass, and after a quick swirl and sniff, you’ll immediately know that you’re getting ready to enjoy classic Bordeaux. Earthy aromas of spice and dark berries float around subtle, yet present oak shadings. Notes of vanilla, mocha, and cedar introduce the palate and as the wine opens in the glass, dark berry flavors mingle with classic hints of graphite. The tannins are beautifully integrated at this time and they present that classic “dusty tannin” experience we all love in well-made Bordeaux.

Hammond and I have enjoyed a few glasses of the Cap Royal over the last year or two and I must say, this wine has developed in the bottle like a champ! It’s still showing some youthful nuance; however, I feel that it’s in a perfect spot right now for immediate enjoyment and through early 2022.

My ultimate pairing for this wine would be lamb loin chops, with a grilled or seared beef tenderloin coming in as a close second.

If you’re a Bordeaux aficionado, hop on this one to drink while your classified growths are resting in the cellar. New to Bordeaux? This is a great one to try in order to experience the classic Bordeaux vibe without putting a dent in the wallet.
