Château Coulonge “Homage Malbec” Morens, Bordeaux, France

100% Malbec from Bordeaux!

Cabernet Sauvignon from Argentina and Malbec from Bordeaux? It may seem like we’ve stepped into some whacky alternate wine universe — I assure you we haven’t!

Recent effects of climate change have prompted vignerons worldwide to rethink how they plant their vineyards. Many are choosing to plant non-traditional varietals, friendlier to the changing conditions. Other vignerons are finding they can work with grapes that would never ripen in their region.

Over the years in Bordeaux, Malbec has played a diminishing role in the traditional Bordeaux blend, and these days, it’s rarely if ever bottled 100%. Artisan vigneron Nicolas Roux is changing that.

Another great selection from Jean-Christian Rostagni

Regular AWM customers are no stranger to the wines of Nicholas Roux and Château Coulonge. My good friend and everyone’s favorite Frenchman, Jean-Christian Rostagni, first introduced us to the delightful red and white Bordeaux blends from Nicholas. They were instant staff and customer favorites, and Hammond and I consider them our official “Bordeaux house wines.” I recently had the pleasure of re-tasting this superb Malbec with Jean-Christian, and I just had to get it into this week’s newsletter!

After taking over from his father Daniel, Nicholas Roux became the third-generation of his family to make wine at Château Coulonge. “Homage” Malbec is an homage to his grandfather Raymond, a man who provided a tremendous amount of encouragement and guidance in Nicholas’s younger days.

Aromas of spicy dark berries waft around the glass with hints of smoke and spice, leading to a palate of berry compote. There’s plenty of blueberry and black plum on the palate to nicely balance the soft yet present tannins that remain polished throughout the lengthy finish. It’s in a gorgeous spot now, so drink over the next 12-18 months.

Enjoy this with chops, steaks, and just about anything from the grill. It also will pair very nicely with hearty cool weather soups and stews, and I can’t think of a better wine with a burger made from locally sourced beef or lamb.
