Classic RIght Bank Bordeaux!

Any allusion to Bordeaux in conversation will inevitably conjure a wide variety of thoughts and perceptions. For some, it refers to a city of international finance and commerce, performing business that transcends global boundaries. To others, it’s all about enjoying a plate of world-class oysters in one of Europe’s most glamorous cities.

If you’re a fan of old-world wines, it’s the epicenter of noble grapes — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Sauvignon Blanc. Generations of famous families and properties cemented this legacy, and they remain some of the most sought-after wines on the planet.

All of those famous, venerable names in Bordeaux are great; however, the wines that really interest me these days are coming from a new generation of young vignerons and property owners. This new group of independent vignerons is focused intently on the region’s history and tradition; they also bring a fresh entrepreneurial spirit, centering on sound ecological principles and cutting-edge technology.

I’ve been tasting quite a bit of terrific Bordeaux lately with my good friend and everyone’s favorite Frenchman, Jean-Christian Rostagni. Jean-Christian has a keen focus and admirable talent for searching out this new generation of Bordeaux vignerons. Château la Roseraie is one of his latest finds.

The Fanara family are stewards of three properties in Saint-Émilion: Château Clos des Abbesses, La Grande Abbesse (both Grand Cru), and Château La Roseraie. All of the properties are farmed sustainably, without the use of pesticides or herbicides. One of the keys to the family’s success is their close relationship with local coopers, allowing them to fine-tune their barrels for each wine.

The 2016 Château la Roseraie is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. In the glass, you’ll instantly recognize notes of cassis, plum, and graphite in this classic Right Bank Bordeaux. It’s at a lovely point of development right now; however, it will hold very nicely in the cellar for at least a few years. If you guessed that I might suggest pairing this with lamb chops, you would be spot on! I’d also love it with filet of beef or braised short ribs.
