Big mouth-full of wine at a bargain price

AWM regulars will remember this iconic bargain brand from years ago. It fell off our radar here at the shop, so I was delighted when a supplier recently brought a sample.

The real news here is the return of the project’s original winemaker, Adam LaZarre. Adam is the ultimate “vineyard to table” guy, and with his return, all of the fruit is sourced once again from the Central Coast. Adam personally selects vineyards, manages farming practices, and completely oversees all aspects of winemaking — and as expected, the quality of the wine has blossomed.

I started to write a tasting note for this wine, however, I love the one penned by Adam and the winery:

“Blueberry, blueberry, and more blueberry on the nose with hints of cinnamon and cedar in the background. We’re talking blueberry motor oil here. Lush and sweet with layers of black and blue fruits that wrap around the tongue. Melting tannins that leave the impression of milk chocolate coat the mouth. Look towards crystallized cheeses as a great pairing: Manchego or Iberico come to mind. Blue Cheeses like Stilton are superb. Brings out the blueberry in the wine. Therefore, the PERFECT pairing is with a black and blue burger. If you re a vegetarian, a veggie burger covered in blue cheese”.

It’s indeed a big mouth-full of wine, however, it’s still very lively and the tannins are ripe and beautifully integrated. The round jammy notes are well balanced by surprisingly nice lift and brightness — this is a whole lot of wine for the money!
