Garigue and Sun in the Med

Domaine des Lauriers was established 50 years ago after the purchase of a modest vineyard plot near Pézenas, in the village of Castelnau de Guers. Over the years, the estate has grown to more than 45 hectares of carefully chosen vineyards, representing the full scope of diversity in the region’s terroir. The combined influence of the Mediterranean, Lake Thau, and the scrubby landscape of fragrantly-scented garigue all contribute to the distinctive terroir of the estate. The Domaine is farmed lutte raisonnée, and the winery was completely modernized in the late 1990s with a gravity-fed transfer system that almost completely eliminates the need to pump wine during transfers.

The Cabrol Family

Mark Cabrol is a true student of the soil. Over the years, he has flawlessly paired the estate’s diversity of soil types with the most suitable grapes for each and every individual vineyard plot. His success in this endeavor shines brilliantly in the bottle!

The dominant terroir of the estate is comprised of red clay soil and scattered pebbles. Much like Châteauneuf-du-Pape to the north, these pebbles reflect sun and also retain warmth, helping the late-ripening white grapes mature properly. Many of the estate’s other hillsides are on calcareous-clay soils. This contributes complexity and wonderful minerality in their IGP Pays d’Oc Rolle and provides adequate moisture — even during the incredibly dry Mediterranean summers.

Instant staff and customer favorites!

We were immediately dazzled with the quality and typicity of these wines when we tasted them with the importer. Even more dazzling was the price — incredible quality for such a modest price! I highly recommend both of these wines.

2018 Domaine des Lauriers Rolle
Rolle is the local name for Vermentino, and the Cabrol family has some of the best plantings in the region. The 2018 is beautifully aromatic and features lovely floral aromas leading to a palate bursting with peaches and apricots. The stone fruit notes are beautifully balanced by fresh, zippy acidity, and the by the classic salty notes indigenous to all of the vineyards close to the Med. This refreshing white has the minerality and verve of Picpoul and also the roundness of Viognier. Enjoy this out on the porch, deck, patio and by the pool. I’ll be putting a 6-pack of this and the Rosé aside for when Hammond and I head to the beach later in the summer! Perfect with shellfish, white-fleshed fish and poultry. Let the good times Rolle!

2015 Domaine des Lauriers Cabernet Sauvignon-Syrah Rosé
We drink dry Rosé all year, however, Hammond and I especially enjoy it in the summer months. Its refreshing combination of gentle red fruit in a white wine structure is an unbeatable antidote to the summer heat. The Cabrol family’s Rosé is a 50-50 blend Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, with each varietal making a distinct contribution. Without question, this is one of the most aromatic Rosés I’ve encountered so far this year, and the plush palate of red berry, cranberry is perfectly balanced with ample acidity. I can’t wait to get a glass of this next to a grilled or sous-vide salmon!
