Marques del Silvo Rioja Cosecha 2019 La Rioja, Spain

Our new favorite Tuesday Night Rioja

Years back, when I coined the phrase “Tuesday Night Wine,” I had no idea that it would become a regular part of local wine vocabulary. Over the last twenty or so years, it’s become a shorthand ordering method for AWM customers, and we hear it almost daily.

So precisely, what is a Tuesday Night Wine? In the most simple terms, it’s a wine you can feel good about pulling the cork on a Tuesday night — or any night for that matter.

Diving a little deeper, the Tuesday Night Wine has to meet specific criteria. First and foremost, it has to represent quality and value, drinking well above its modest price point — and that price point has to hit below fifteen bucks. The Tuesday Night Wine must also genuinely represent and reflect its home region, ideally produced at a well-regarded estate or top regional cooperative.

For me, these are the most challenging and yet also the most satisfying wines I source for the shop.

Marquis del Silvo

Marquis del Silvo is a private label project I sourced from one of my favorite European connections — the wife and husband team of Eva López and Ignacio Alonso. They have excellent relationships with top estates and vignerons throughout Spain, and their wines are always customer and staff favorites in our Spanish department. Since I source these directly through my buddy importer Craig Baker, it eliminates a lot of “nickels” tacked on by middlemen. This way, I can offer them to email subscribers and locals at the best price!

Marquis del Silvo Conseca 2019 is every bit a Tuesday Night Wine. It checks all the right boxes — great price, great producer, fair trade, and it’s entirely authentic to its home terroir. In the glass, the gorgeous, ripe fruit fills the palate all the way through the pleasingly dry finish, ending with a touch of balsamic. On the nose, hints of briary blueberry and dark cherry mingle with herbs and spice. This juicy red is completely un-oaked to preserve the vibrant freshness of the fruit while perfectly retaining the lovely gloss and polish.

This is a whole lot of Rioja for the money! Enjoy this with just about anything off the grill, chops, soups, stews, lighter fare, and even pasta and pizza! Seriously, this is classic Joven Rioja at a price lower than most supermarket plonk.
